Crochet braids are one of my favorite protective styles to install because they offer endless versatility, personality, and room for creativity. Recently, I had the pleasure of creating a stunning salt and pepper look for my client, a style that perfectly captured her elegance.
The fun part? Things didn’t go exactly as planned.
My client had ordered salt and pepper crochet hair from Amazon, exactly what I recommended, but due to a mix up with the seller, she received less hair than expected. Instead of letting that derail our plans, we got resourceful. She happened to have some leftover crochet hair from a previous install, which she had washed and conditioned. The texture matched closely, though it was slightly longer and a bit older than the new hair.
Most people might have worried about the mismatch, but this is where adaptability comes in. As a stylist, my job isn’t just to install hair; it’s to make it work no matter what challenges arise. I was able to seamlessly integrate both textures. The result? A natural, intentional looking salt and pepper style that turned out beautiful.
This experience reminded me that in hairstyling, just like in life, adaptation is everything. Things don’t always go according to plan, but the ability to adjust, blend, and still create something beautiful is what makes the process so rewarding.
My client celebrated her salt and pepper beauty, and I was reminded once again why I love what I do. This is so much more than hair; it’s problem solving, artistry, and flexibility all woven together. I celebrate the beauty of adaptation. Whether it’s mixing textures, colors, or lengths, there’s always a way to make it work and to turn every challenge into an opportunity for creativity.
