Hair loss can deeply impact our sense of identity and confidence, especially for those navigating alopecia. While the journey looks different for everyone, finding protective styles that offer both beauty and comfort can be empowering. One option gaining popularity for its versatility and natural look is crochet braids with Lace Frontal Closure.

What Are Crochet Braids?

Crochet braids are a protective hairstyle where extensions are looped through a braided base using a latch hook or crochet needle. This method allows for endless styling possibilities such as curly, straight, twists, faux locs, while minimizing tension on your natural hair and scalp.

What is a Lace Frontal Closure?

A lace frontal closure is a hairpiece that looks/mimics a hairline. It’s like a Toupee, but significantly better.

Why Crochet Braids Work for Alopecia

Alopecia can cause thinning or patchy hair loss in specific areas, and crochet braids offer strategic coverage. Here’s why it’s a great choice:

  • Custom Coverage: The braided foundation can be tailored around sparse areas, allowing you to keep stress off the scalp where hair is thinnest.
  • Low Manipulation: Unlike traditional sew-ins or glue-ins, crochet styles avoid pulling or damaging adhesive, making them gentler for sensitive scalps. Just an FYI, I do not use glue on any of the hair styles I do. I typically use holding spray such as Got2B Glued Blasting Freeze Spray.

  • Natural-Looking Results: When installed correctly, crochet braids can mimic natural hair textures beautifully, whether you’re going for a coily afro, loose waves, twists or braids.

Tips for Concealing Alopecia with Crochet Braids

  1. Consult a Professional Stylist: Especially for more severe hair loss, a stylist experienced in working with alopecia can map a braid pattern that offers maximum coverage with minimal tension.
  2. Choose Lightweight Hair: Opt for lightweight synthetic or human hair to reduce stress on your roots and scalp. Pre-looped hair is especially easy to install and style.
  3. Use a Net for Extra Support: A crochet mesh cap can be worn over your cornrows to help anchor the crochet hair evenly and protect delicate areas.
  4. Use Lace Frontal Closure for additional coverage: To avoid additional tension on the thinning areas around your frontal and mid scalp, use a closure piece for additional coverage and protection. In most cases, I recommend an era to ear closure.
  5. Focus on Scalp Care: Even in a protective style, your scalp needs love. Cleanse gently with witch hazel pads or a no-rinse scalp cleanser, and moisturize regularly.
  6. Style Smart: Don’t over-manipulate the crochet hair. Avoid tight ponytails or buns that can tug at your base.

Inspiring Confidence

Hair doesn’t define us, but it can be a powerful expression of who we are. Whether you’re newly diagnosed with alopecia or have been living with it for years, crochet braids with a lace frontal closure can offer not just a protective style, but a creative and confidence-boosting way to feel like yourself again.

Remember: You are not alone.
