Re-braiding the edges prevents breakage:

When the hair starts to grow, the entire braid hangs on the new growth. The hair finally gives in to the weight of the extensions and falls off.

This lady had her edges redone 7 weeks later. Her hair and scalp is clean. The braid was all black at first, but she decided on color 30 in the front this time to give it a fresh look. It looks like brand new individual braids.
